What is the difference between Palm serial accessories and Springboard accessories?

Palm accessories use the serial connection normally used by the HotSync cradle.

More Information

Palm accessories use the serial connection normally used by the HotSync cradle.

These accessories are therefore somewhat unwieldy and change the size of the Palm PDAs. Furthermore, the accessories are not plug and play like the Springboard. Not only does the Visor have a USB port in place of the Palm serial port, but the Visor also has the Springboard slot.

It is also important to note that the standard serial port is very slow and a potential bottleneck, while the Springboard essentially allows a peripheral to be attached directly to the motherboard. For example, the Tiger Woods PGA Golf game would be impossible to build working through the serial port.
