Going Corporate: Handspring partners with Aether

Wednesday September 26, 2001 - 6:19 PM EST - By Marcus Adolfsson

Handspring today announced that it has entered into a strategic sales and marketing relationship with Aether Systems, a leading provider of wireless data products and services. Aether and Handspring will focus on delivering wireless enterprise solutions based on Aether Fusion*, that take advantage of the Handspring Visor and its broad selection of Springboard expansion modules as well as future wireless products. Key benefits of the relationship include joint efforts in product certification, evaluation, testing, training and sales.

Aether Systems helps enterprise customers improve efficiency and profitability by providing the services, software and support necessary to extend applications like email and sales force automation from the desktop to any wireless device.

"Handheld computing is maturing within the enterprise marketplace," said Lee Epting, director of enterprise sales for Handspring. "IT managers, CIOs and practice leaders are looking for ways to increase the value of their mobile work force and integrated handheld solutions are often the answer. We recognize that the hardware is only one piece of the equation - tailored wireless applications and services must also be provided, serviced and deployed. Aether is an industry leader in this area and a great partner."

"Handspring will now be able to offer customers a comprehensive package that couples their handheld device with scalable, wireless solutions, that deliver increased productivity and efficiency," said Kimberly Kopp, director, strategic business development for Aether Systems. "Any enterprise looking for cost-effective, manageable mobile solutions on one of the most flexible platforms available will find tremendous value in the Aether-Handspring solution."

Handspring's Visor family of handheld computers is uniquely positioned in the enterprise market due to the Springboard expansion slot and the over 60 Springboard modules on the market today, including five wireless modems. Combined with thousands of Palm OS applications tailored for the enterprise and solutions providers like Aether, the Visor is one of the most flexible and elegant solutions for enterprise computing available today. The consistency in the Springboard expansion technology across the Visor family enables cost savings as well as streamlined IT management and support.

Aether Fusion*, Aether's wireless enabling technology foundation, extends existing and future business applications wirelessly to any handheld device over any wireless network through industry-standard technology components, hosting services, Aether's synchronization, device management and web transformation solutions, and its Aether Intelligent Messaging (AIM) data transport layer. Aether's technology foundation enhances the speed, efficiency and security of data transmission and represents the natural evolution of wireless at a time when enterprise and carrier customers are seeking ways to reduce complexity, extend their competitive advantage and increase return on technology investments.
