Opinions: GoType! for Visor keyboard
Cyberchomp | Hmmm..... |
| Santa brought me a Visor for Xmas. I travel quite a bit and a portable keyboard would be a *must*. Haven't yet decided on either the GoType or the Stowaway, but I'm leaning toward the GoType. The GoType looks to be a bit sturdier. I'm concerned about the plastic prongs on the Stowaway; judging from what I've read here and on Amazon, installing the Visor could be tricky.
I don't care as much about the WOW! factor as some others have regarding the Stowaway. My keyboard (like my Visor) would wind up in my briefcase, not my pocket. I own a sub-notebook to begin with, so small keyboards aren't a problem for me. All I want is something that's sturdy, compact and durable. The GoType fits the bill. The added software is gravy. 'Nuff said. |
Doug Collins | Well Made But Too Tiny To Use |
| The GoType Keyboard is very well made and the software that comes with it (a word processor of sorts and a thesarus) work well. However, the keyboard is simply too small to use unless you're very tiny yourself. I made frequent errors, such as turing on caps lock everytime I hit the shift key, and adding numerals with letters from the QWERTY row. I returned it to LandWare with no hassle. Interestingly, when I told the company rep why I was sending it back, she replied that "a lot of people say that." Try the Targus folding keyboard -- it's much better in every respect. |
Clyde | Disappointing |
| Software is good. Keyboard sucks. Chicklet keys too small for fast typing. Good only for hunt-and-peckers who have difficulty with graffiti. |
Ted | Get a stowaway instead |
| I have tried both, bought a stowaway and HIGHLY reccomed it.
The $30 extra for the Targus stowaway is well worth it.
The targus is:
More like a real keyboard
Much more portable
More functions

Bill G | Beam Receive must be ON?? No Hot Dock? |
| Two major complaints:
BEAM RECEIVE must be ON (Which uses more battery)
CANNOT HOT DOCK - Visor must be off before docking
in keyboard. |
Anonymous | Keys are TOO small! |
| The key spacing is far to small (i have normal sized hands)
Get a stowaway - the extra $30 buys portability and a functional keyboard!
Rating: 2 / 10
Keep trying Landware! Targus has you beaten! |
Gwen Andersen | Tremendous customer support. |
| Excellent value with the software and USB synching.
I had a couple of glitches with the keyboard and I have high praise for the prompt, courteous customer support I received.
I do recommend users with large hands try it out before buying though. |
Anonymous | Awesome! |
| This is one better than the Stowaway because of the USB cable (that it actualy came with) and ability to hotsync from the keyboard...Awesome!!! |
Mike | Good keyboard, great deal |
| After trying both the GoType and the Stowaway I settled on the GoType for my keyboard needs. Admittedly, price was a big factor in selecting the GoType Pro. However, the edge was further given to the GoType by the inclusion of TakeNote, WordSleuth and the ability to HotSync via a USB connection. The ability to fold something up and carry in a pocket did not concern me in the least. Besides, the pockets on most causal pants and dress pants are not designed to comfortably hold items the size of the Stowaway. You will end up putting it in a backpack or brief. Simply put, the GoType does exactly what I need it to do, and it does it well. The 85% QWERTY keyboard of the GoType is more than acceptable for my hands and typing abilities. For those planning on doing a tremendous amount of typing, the Stowaway would probably be more suitable. Both products are of high quality, each with its own pros and cons. If you are looking to the bottom line, however, getting more for less should appeal to any consumer. Try each and then decide. |
Shane | A fabulous keyboard, and a good deal too! |
| When I was looking for a keyboard for my Visor I needed it to fulfill three main criteriea;
1. Be sturdy, and stand a lot of use and wear.
2. Be small when in use and when folded up.
3. Affordable enough so I could justify using it.
And wonder what keyboard won for me? The GoType!. It is small enough opened so I can use it in cramped situations, like on a small desk area or in my lap. I can also throw it in my backpack (I'm a fulltime college student) or my carrying case along with my normal Visor traveling kit and off I go! When I get to my destination, I just sit down get out the keyboard plop in my Visor, turn on the Visor and launch my DOC editor and off I go. It is VERY easy to use, but I do have some MAJOR gripes about it. You CANNOT use a modem or any other Springboard that uses the "COM" port while the keyboard is active. This hold's true for the normal driver, but I haven't tried the HackMaster version yet. But chances are it won't work... oh well. |
