Opinions: SpringPort Modem 56 GlobalACCESS
Guardian | Says New Batteries Are Low |
| Just received my Springport. Little disappointed since the photos at their sight shows a considerably different version. Buyers need to understand that they will be getting the SM56GA model which uses three AAA batteries. Pictures on web site show model with a batter pack that doesn't appear to be available yet. Also, I put in the batteries sent with the modem and then put the modem in my Visor Deluxe. Asked for my country which was correct and then started a modem test. Came back and said the modem batteries were too low and needed changing. I went through three sets of brand new batteries with the same results. Modem won't work. Tech support doesn't have this item listed in their on-line support list of products so you'll have to call for help.
Now I've got to call and probably ship back at my expense to get a working modem. I could have just bought one at the local CompUSA and returned it tomorrow. Last time I buy something on-line!!!! |
Doug | A little bulky but works great |
| Yes, it's a bit bulky but not so much that it makes the Visor difficult to use. I love the fact that you get a full version of MultiMail, and I like the fact that it doesn't seem to drain the Visor's batteries (it shouldn't since it uses its own). On the minus side, I wish the software would eliminate a few steps necessary to connect to my ISP. Also, I wish I could see my actual connection speed. The bottom line is this: if the bulkiness doesn't bother you, this is the modem to buy! |
Brian | Easy and Works! |
| Works like a charm with my Visor Prism. It sure it nice to see Avantgo update so fast remotely!! |
Jim Bezdan | Operates great, but a bit too large |
| I have used it for two days now and am thinking of putting it up on ebay. It functions great, but is just a bit too big. The thin modem seems like the next choice, but I don't like the extra cable I will have to carry. |
genius | Speed & ease of use worth the price |
| While I am not a heavy duty user, I've found this modem perfect for when I'm on the road and want to leave the lap-top at home. Have found the weight & configuration to be no problem at all. I DO wish Xircom provided case for the unit to protect it in my bag or briefcase. Other than that nitpick, no problems! |
Anonymous | Too Big! |
| The modem is quite large and also gives me trouble on my prism. Also, I'm disappointed that I cannot leave the modem in on my Prism and cradle the unit at the same time--it hits the cradle! |
Jim Cote | Fatal Errors w/ Platinum and Prism |
| Works OK on other Visor Models, but until the Xircom makes fixes for the Platinum and Prism, its worthless on them. Xircom doesn't seem to have its support act together on this product line. Their Website is a mess and it took me a while to find someone on the phone to provide help. |
The Cat | If you have the Back-Up Module it is Great |
| The modem worked great right out of the box. Only problem was when the batteries got low. The Visor would lockup and at first I had no idea what was wrong. Trying to fix it I had two Hard Resets (Lost all data-thank God for Hot Sync) in three days. After the second reset I bought the Backup Module. Why? I have no idea when the batteries will go and give me another Hard Reset. Also it is a great security having all your data backed-up. By the way the Backup Module works great. Avantgo works alright but it sometimes gives you the large size webpages so you have go pulling the screen image around. I think ProxiWeb is much better. It drives all your webpages through their proxi server that restructures it for your Visor. Works great and it's free!!!! But use Avantgo to make "Channels" (BBC News, Weatherchannel etc) that will be updated everytime you hotsync. It is now my newspaper, even gives me my movies schedule of all the theatres near me (Yahoo Channel). Bottom line: if you keep batteries in no longer than 3 hrs you will have alot of fun surfing. Email works great also. |
