OmniSky offers free modem with annual subscription

Wednesday May 2, 2001 - 10:11 PM EST - By Marcus Adolfsson

OmniSky [review] today announced a new incentive for mobile professionals to take advantage of OmniSky's award-winning wireless e-mail and Internet service. Effective today, users of the Handspring™ Visor family of handheld computers who sign up for a year of the OmniSky service are eligible for a free modem. This two-month offer is timed to take advantage of an active consumer electronics buying season that includes gift-giving occasions such as Father's Day and graduation.

OmniSky is offering Visor Platinum, Visor Prism and Visor Edge owners two options to take advantage of this special incentive. Under the first option, subscribers pay a flat fee of $39.95 per month with an annual contract. Under the second option, subscribers pre-pay $359.95 for a year of service, which is equivalent to $29.99 per month. Subscribers who purchase a modem for $299.95, and activate either service plan are eligible for a $299.95 mail-in rebate. The offer is valid through June 30, 2001. Early-termination fees apply.

"Handspring's innovative devices have proven extremely popular with mobile professionals and are fueling the growth of the mobile device market," said Kristine Stebbins, OmniSky's vice president of marketing. "With our free modem offer, OmniSky is providing a compelling incentive for the rapidly growing community of Handspring enthusiasts to experience our award-winning wireless service."

"Web browsing and e-mail access are key applications for the handheld user and the combination of a Handspring Visor handheld and an OmniSky wireless modem is a powerful mobile solution," said Lee Epting, director of developer relations for Handspring, Inc.

"OmniSky is making it more affordable than ever for Visor users to have access to their e-mail and the Internet while away from their desktop computer and we are pleased to be working with them to deliver this wireless service to our customers."

The OmniSky service leverages Handspring's innovative Springboard expansion platform with a wireless modem that enables a user to be up and running with the OmniSky service in minutes. Consumers simply purchase an OmniSky wireless modem, run the activation CD on their PC, and snap the modem into the Springboard slot of the Visor Edge, Visor Platinum and Visor Prism handhelds.

Combining OmniSky's popular service and wireless modem with a Handspring handheld computer creates a powerful communications tool that can greatly enhance business and personal productivity. With the OmniSky wireless service, Handspring users can access up to six e-mail accounts, including corporate e-mail via Microsoft Outlook and POP3 accounts. Subscribers also can free surf to practically any Web site, and easily transfer information between PIM (personal information management) applications and the wireless Internet, using Os OneTap.
